Q: Someone told me I can keep the green fret button down while hitting higher ones is that true?
A: Give that someone a pat on the back! Yes, just like a real guitar the highest fretted note will register when strummed. So, when playing single notes you can keep multiple fret buttons held down only the highest one will count. For example, to hit a yellow note, you can hold down yellow, red and green.
Keeping fret buttons held down can make playing some patterns a lot easier. But chords are a different story – you’ll still need to play both notes exactly right to hit a chord. Don't try to fake it &ndash your guitar knows the difference. It's smart like that.
Q: What are hammer-ons and pull-offs and how do I master them?
A: A group of notes which are close together (closer than an 8th note) can be played as a Hammer-On/Pull-Off (HOPO), where the first note is strummed and fretted, and the rest are just fretted.
HOPOs are shown visually. Watch for the white circle in the center of a note gem. If the white circle is surrounded by black, that means you have to fret and strum. If the gem only has a white circle without the black, that means you can just fret and HOPO it, no strum required.
HOPO-ing through really fast passages in solos and in the higher difficulty levels allows you to play challenging licks with ease. To achieve true HOPO mastery, check out the advanced techniques section of the in-game tutorials.
Q: When is the best time to use Star Power in a song?
A: If you're struggling to survive: wait until the most difficult part of the song (usually the solo), and trigger your Star Power right before it begins. Since you get a huge crowd boost from every note you hit, you can boost your ROCK meter significantly, even if you miss lots of notes.
If you're not worried about losing, and are just playing for a high score or a better rating: wait until you have a long streak going, and have your multiplier up to 4X, then trigger Star Power to double your multiplier. If you can keep your streak going, an 8X multiplier can pile up a lot of points.
Q: If I beat the game on Expert, can I use my unlocks, like the Battle Axe, in other difficulty settings?
A: Once you get the battle axe, it's yours forever. You can use it anytime you want. However, stuff that you buy in the store is only accessible in the campaign that you bought it in. So, if you bought a bunch of guitars in Expert and then start a Medium campaign, you'll start off with no cash and nothing bought.
Q: Sometimes I finish a song and feel I've done really well, but only get a 4 star rating. What's required to get a 5 star rating?
A: Star ratings are based entirely on your final point total. But aside from just hitting more notes, you have to keep your multiplier up as high as possible for as long as possible. You also need to get all the star power you can and use it at times when you will be able to hold a streak while hitting the most notes. Keep practicing... eventually you'll break through a plateau and get a ton more points.
Q: Any extra pointers for honing my playing technique and achieving rock zen?
A: More to learn there always will be, Grasshopper:
- In sections where you're repeating the same note over and over, try alternating your strumming up and down. This will make it easier on your strumming hand.
- When you first start out, don't avoid hitting the blue button with your pinky. Use that little finger as much as you can – it's curtail to have all 4 finger working equally well to master the harder difficulties.
- Think of the neck of your SG Guitar as being divided up into two positions – one where your index finger is on the green button, and the other where it rests on the red. Moving between these two positions allows you to cover all 5 buttons. If you reach an especially hard passage with a lot of fast notes, try to plan out when you'll switch between these two positions.
Q: Holly cannoli! I love those unlock songs in GH. Where do I find out more about the unlock bands?
A: And the songs love you back, my friend. Check out the website links below:
